Doctrine and Covenants 1:24

Have you ever struggled to explain an idea to someone, only to realize they weren’t “getting it”? Maybe you were using the wrong words, the wrong tone, or the wrong analogy. This challenge isn’t unique to humans—even God faces it. In Doctrine and Covenants 1:24, the Lord says, “I am God and have spoken it; these commandments are of me… given in your language, that you might understand.”

Lesson from Doctrine and Covenants 1:24

God doesn’t speak in riddles or celestial jargon. He meets us where we are, using language we understand. This principle is a masterclass in empathy: effective communication starts with understanding the listener’s perspective, who our target audience is.

Think of a parent explaining a complex topic to a child. They simplify without diluting the truth. Similarly, God’s revelations are specifically made to human capacity. He uses stories, parables, and commandments that resonate with our mortal experience.

How can we apply this daily?

  1. Know your audience: Are you speaking to a colleague, a friend, or someone from a different cultural background? Adjust your approach.

  2. Clarity over complexity: Avoid unnecessary jargon. Truth loses its power when it’s not accessible.

  1. Listen first: Divine communication isn’t one-way. To speak effectively, we must first understand others’ needs and doubts.

As a conclusion, when we mirror God’s intentionality, our words become bridges, not barriers, to connection.
